The "INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON THERMAL-HYDRAULIC SCALING FOR SMR SAFETY DEMONSTRATION" Organized by ENEA in collaboration with EDF and UNIROMA1 as part of the European EASI-SMR project, aims to foster the international exchange of methodologies and best practices related to thermal-hydraulic scaling in the context of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) safety demonstration. The workshop brings together experts from the EASI-SMR project and internationally recognized specialists to address key challenges in applying scaling methodologies to experimental thermal-hydraulic research for SMRs. Discussions will focus on the identification of relevant physical phenomena, the critical analysis of scaling methodologies, and the role of both integral and separate-effect tests in supporting safety demonstration. The outcomes will contribute to the characterization of new experimental facilities developed within the EASI-SMR project and provide a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art in thermal-hydraulic scaling for SMRs.
Objective
The workshop is dedicated to reviewing and discussing the state-of-the-art in thermal-hydraulic scaling methodologies for SMRs, focusing on their contribution to safety demonstration activities.
Specific objectives include:
- Identifying key thermal-hydraulic phenomena relevant to SMR safety analysis.
- Reviewing and discussing scaling methodologies and approaches.
- Evaluation of applicability and limitations of existing scaling approaches.
- Discussing the design and characterization of new experimental facilities under development within EASI-SMR project.
- Assessing the role of scaled experiments in supporting system code validation and licensing processes.
- Sharing current best practices and lessons learned from operators of major experimental facilities.
The objective is to set up a bridge between M.Sc. students, PhD students and early career professionals and professionals specialized in the field.
General program
The workshop will feature expert presentations on various topics related to Light-Water SMR
thermal-hydraulics scaling and its link with safety demonstration.
Key topics include:
- SMR-specific phenomenology to be investigated;
- SMR phenomenology addressed in EASI-SMR project;
